Mississippi Road and Elsah Road on Highhway 100, the Great River Road

Looking upriver at the homes in the lower part of Elsah, Illinois, the gardens and garages are underwater and the homes’ foundations are protected with sandbags. The Great River Road is closed and access to all of Elsah is only through small, winding roads on the bluff above the town. While the news talks about flooding in 50, 100, or 500 year cycles, in the last 20 years, lower Elsah has been inundated every few years— and twice in 2013.
Created during a Six Mile Sculpture Works Artists’ Residency, Alfresco Productions, Granite City, Illinois.
