ABOUT THIS WATERSHED
Residents of the picturesque town of Elsah, Illinois, have become accustom to floods. The town’s location below the confluence of the Missouri and Illinois Rivers and upriver from the point where those two rivers join the Mississippi subjects them to a triple threat. When heavy rainfall in the Missouri, Illinois, and Mississippi watersheds combine, the Mississippi River backs up, pouring additional water into Elsah. In the last several years, preparing for and cleaning up from the muddy water has become and almost annual chore, but heavy rains made this the second flood of the year.

Created during a Six Mile Sculpture Works Artists’ Residency, Alfresco Productions, Granite City, Illinois.
