ABOUT THIS WATERSHED
Storm drains carry rainwater to area streams and rivers, while sanitary sewers carry wastewater to treatment plants where the water is filtered and processed before being released into those same streams. Older areas such as the city of St. Louis have combined sewer systems with both sanitary and storm drainage routed through combined sewer systems like the 100-year-old brick tunnel under this alley. Most of the time, this means that sewage treatment plants clean both storm and sanitary water together. But when it rains a lot, there is too much water for the system and the excess water and waste is pumped directly into the rivers.
