ABOUT THIS WATERSHED
The Still Blue cairn rests under the arm of the rock formation that gives Devil’s Prop Nature Preserve its name. The rock is unusual, but the entire ecosystem of bluff, stream, trees, and plants is a rare chance to see what the region was like before so much land was cleared for agriculture.
The Illinois Nature Preserves Commission confirms this. Their website readss, “Currently there are only 654 high-quality, undisturbed natural communities in the state. Approximately half of these areas are unprotected, and sites are either in danger of being, or have already been, totally or partially destroyed.”
