A Milkstone cairn on Illinois State Rt. 84 north of Savanna, Illinois, overlooks the Lazy River Marina on the Mississippi River below the Mississippi Palisades State Park, a partially conserved section of the Mississippi River Palisades. These Palisades are a National Natural Landmark. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, palisades is the name for a “fence of stakes especially for defense,” or “a long strong stake pointed at the top and set close with others as a defense,” or when the P is capitalized, “a line of bold cliffs.”
