National Forest Road No.3778, off Winnie Road NE, Minnesota—June 2016 47° 23’ 56”N  94° 18’ 38”W Elevation 1,310 feet

A gravel road named Painted Turtle NW (National Forest Road #3778 on the map) and marked with a Mississippi River Trails marker leads from Winnie Road NE to this location where the Mississippi River enters Lake Winnibigoshish. Minnesota’s “Lake Winnie” is the fourth-largest lake in Minnesota. Located in the Chippewa National Forest, and surrounded by hundreds of square miles of diverse woodlands, gently rolling hills, and lush marshlands, Lake Winnie is 67,000 acres of clear, pristine water where fishermen catch walleye, jumbo perch, northern pike, and muskie, and other fish.

National River Trails lead to some of the most beautiful, wild places on the Mississippi River. https://www.nps.gov/experiences/bike-the-mississippi-river-trail.htm
